Our sewers are designed to cope with human waste and toilet roll - and nothing else! Putting unsuitable items down the drain can cause sewer blockages, which can in turn lead to sewer flooding.
Guernsey Water has to frequently clear out sewers around the Island when they are blocked by unsuitable products being flushed down the loo or washed down the drain.
The majority of blockages are caused by cooking fat and oil, which congeal in the sewers, forming a thick layer around the pipe. This prevents sewage from flowing and can cause it to back up. Wet wipes and sanitary items also contribute to some of the worst blockages. Sewer blockages can lead to sewage flooding in people’s homes. Guenrsey Water is encouraging customers to 'BIN IT, DON’T BLOCK IT!'
The only items that can be safely flushed are human waste and toilet paper.
Items that cannot be flushed include:
- Baby wipes
- Sanitary towels
- Fats, oils and grease
- Cotton buds and cotton wool
- Hand towels
- Kitchen roll
- Food waste
- Incontinence products
- Colostomy bags
- Plasters, bandages or condoms
- Dental floss
