SEWAGE TREATMENT INVESTIGATION CHARGE DROPPED
Guernsey Water would like to reminder Islanders that the portion of the Wastewater Charge assigned to investigating sewage treatment options was removed from the overall charge with effect from the 31st March 2012.
However, Guernsey Water’s billing process means that some customers will continue to see the charge being collected for the period up to 31st March on their bills until the billing of the first quarter of the year has finished (end of May).

SEWAGE TREATMENT INVESTIGATION CHARGE TO BE DROPPED
The Public Services Department can advise that the portion of the Wastewater Charge assigned to investigating sewage treatment options will be removed from the overall charge with effect from the 31st March 2012.
The charge, which was originally set at £50 per household per year, was used to fund the study carried out by marine experts Intertek METOC in 2011 and some other sewer pipe repair works where seawater was entering the system.
The result of the marine study informed the States Report which was approved by the States of Guernsey at their January 2012 meeting.

FOUL WATER PROJECT TO TAKE PLACE ALONG ST SAMPSONS COAST ROAD
Guernsey Water’s wastewater section will shortly be carrying out foul water connection refurbishment works along Les Bas Courtils Road in St Sampsons.
The two-week project will begin on Sunday 19th February 2012, and will necessitate the closure of Delancey Lane and the implementation of single-flow traffic along Les Bas Courtils Road under the control of temporary traffic lights. A section of the cycle lane will also be closed for the duration of the works.

RUE DES LANDES TO CLOSE FOR MANHOLE REPAIR
Guernsey Water’s wastewater section will be carrying out urgent refurbishment works to a manhole along the Rue des Landes in the Forest. The works, which will require the Rue des Landes to be closed between La Route de Farras and La Planque Lane, will take place on Sunday 5th February, and should be completed within the day.

PUBLIC WELCOMED TO PRESENTATION ON SEWAGE TREATMENT
The Public Services Department is inviting interested members of the public to attend a presentation that it is holding on the issue of sewage treatment, which will be debated by the States of Guernsey later this month.
The presentation will take place on Thursday 12th January in the Theatre at Beau Sejour Leisure Centre, and will commence at 7pm.

BELLE GREVE RESIDENTS INVITED TO WASTEWATER PROJECT UPDATE
Residents of the Belle Greve area are being invited to a drop-in session to learn the latest developments in the planned wastewater installation at the site.
The session will take place on 12th October and will run from 5 - 7pm. Nearby residents and other interested members of the public are invited to the existing Belle Greve wastewater plant where the project team and preferred contractors will give updates of progress being made in the development of the new inlet works.

WASTEWATER NETWORK EXTENSION SCHEME COMMENCING AT L'EREE
Guernsey Water’s wastewater section has commenced a project to install a foul water pumping station and sewer along the L’Eree coast road.
These works are part of the overall Network Extension Programme (NEP), a long-term scheme which aims to connect as many Island properties (both domestic and commercial) onto the wastewater network (main drain) as possible.

LITTLE RUSSEL MARINE STUDY TO BEGIN
THE Public Services Department is starting a programme of fieldwork to assess the water quality in the Little Russel in order to scientifically determine the requirement for sewage treatment.
The data from the marine study will not only ascertain whether or not sewage treatment is necessary, but will also give indications as to the appropriate level of treatment which would be required.

VAUVERT TO BE CLOSED FOR WASTEWATER NETWORK PROJECT
Guernsey Wastewater will be installing a new surface water sewer in Vauvert as part of its strategic separation of surface and foul water sewers.
The project, which will commence on 25th July 2011 and will necessitate the closure of Vauvert for six weeks over the school summer holidays, will be carried out by local contractors Geomarine at a cost of around £150k.

BELLE GREVE WASTEWATER PROJECT REACHES TENDER STAGE
Guernsey Water will shortly be going out to tender in order to appoint the most suitable contractor for the Belle Greve inlet works project.
The project, which is due to commence early in 2012 once the States of Deliberation has approved the tender choice, involves replacing the existing inlet facility with a new treatment plant that will remove grit and other non-biodegradable material through the use of state-of-the art mechanical screens.

RUE DU MANOIR CLOSED FOR MANHOLE REFURBISHMENT
Guernsey Wastewater will be carrying out the next phase of their ongoing manhole refurbishment programme in Rue du Manoir in the Forest.
The works, which will run from 21st March to 15th April, will require the road to be closed as heavy concrete cover slabs are taken off and a new lining system is put in place. Selected manholes will be worked on in groups so as to maintain as much access to properties as possible while the works are ongoing.

BELLE GREVE WASTEWATER SITE
Work is scheduled to start in the autumn this year to replace some of the wastewater treatment plant on the site at Belle Greve. The old plant is beyond its normal working life and is in urgent need of replacement.
The new works will comprise storm-water storage tanks to cope with peak flows, together with a treatment plant which will remove grit and other non-biodegradable material. Modern state-of-the-art mechanical screens will remove from the flow any material which will not pass through the 6mm diameter screen (about the size of a small garden pea).

WASTEWATER CHARGE TO COMMENCE FROM APRIL 2011
Guernsey's new Wastewater Charge will be introduced from April 2011, after the Commencement Ordinance was passed by the States at the end of last year.
The charge will cost the average customer around £150 per household per annum, and will consist of a standing charge of £30 per annum and additional charges relating to volume of wastewater discharged (metered customers) or the TRP of the property (unmetered customers). The final portion of the charge will be a fixed fee of £50 per annum per household/business which will be used for sewage treatment investigation works. This fixed fee will be collected for the next four years.

SEWER EXTENSIONS PLANNED AS PART OF SCHOOL REDEVELOPMENT
Guernsey Wastewater will be installing lengths of new sewer main in the Rue des Deslisles as part of the redevelopment works for Les Beaucamps School.
The project at Rue des Deslisles, which begins on 24th July and will also include the Ruette des Deslisles, will involve the installation of 350m of 225mm-diameter foul drainage main which will enable the school and other properties on the road to connect to the main drain.

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PUT DOWN THE DRAIN!
Islanders are being advising to be careful what they dispose of down their drains, as they could be causing sewer blockages which could have severe consequences.
Guernsey Water is warning islanders that the disposal of fats, greases and oils from cooking, and sanitary items such as baby wipes and cotton buds down the sink or toilet can cause sewers to block and pumps to fail, which could potentially lead to sewage leaks on the public highway, or at worse in people’s homes.
