Guernsey Encouraged to Join the #RefillRevolution

Islanders are being asked to get involved with National Refill Day on Thursday 27th September and join the 'Refill Revolution' to support Refill Guernsey.

Refill Guernsey was initiated earlier this year by a partnership between Guernsey Water, Guernsey Waste and Plastic Free Guernsey when 11 year old Destiny Hollyer-Hill approached the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure expressing her passion for the scheme. Refill is a national campaign committed to stopping plastic pollution at source by making it easier to find free tap water on the go than buying a single use plastic bottle.

Spokesperson for Plastic Free Guernsey, Madeleine Norman said "So far, we have 40 refill stations in Guernsey. They are displaying posters and stickers but we are encouraging those stations to tag themselves on the new Refill App launched last week so that everyone can locate them easily".

Everyone can support the initiative by carrying a refillable bottle, downloading the app, finding a refill station and refilling. Using social media to share this using the hashtags '#refillrevolution' and '#refillguernsey' will help spread the word.

Figures show that the average British adult buys more than 3 plastic water bottles a week.

Waste Minimisation and Recycling Officer for Guernsey Waste, Tina Norman-Ross said: "The Refill scheme supports Guernsey's Waste Strategy which prioritises waste prevention and reuse. Our focus is changing behaviour and these figures show how much plastic we can use without even realising. All it takes is a small change and remembering to carry a refillable water bottle to make a difference.''

Margaret McGuinness, Water Quality and Risk Manager at Guernsey Water who sponsored 'Refill Guernsey' said "Guernsey Water also provide temporary drinking water stations at major island events to further encourage the use of refillable bottles".
